September 17, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Six aircraft with Belarusian registration numbers remain under US sanctions following Washington\u2019s decision to ease sanctions against the national airline Bie\u0142avija.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, the sanctions list mentions two Boeing 737s: EW-001PB and EW-001PA. The first aircraft is listed as belonging to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, while the second\u2019s ownership is not specified; however, the US document regarding the partial lifting of sanctions states that the measure does not apply to it. According to the opposition National Anti-Crisis Management (NAM), the second aircraft belongs to \u0141uka\u0161enka as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also under US sanctions is a Bie\u0142avija-owned EW-301PJ, manufactured by the Canadian company CRJ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two sanctioned Il-76 cargo aircraft belong to TAE Avija (previously Transavijaekspart) and have the following registration numbers: EW-78779 and EW-78843.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, US sanctions apply to the Belarus-registered British-Italian helicopter Agusta-Westland AW-139 (15-seat standard version), registration number EW-001PH. It is owned by S\u0142a\u016dkalij, which is linked to \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s ally, Russian businessman Mikhail Gutseriev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington eased its sanctions against Bie\u0142avia after the Belarusian ruler released 52 political prisoners last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bie\u0142avia sanctions were imposed after Belarus\u2019 secret services hijacked Ryanair Flight 4978. Agents cited a false bomb threat to divert the passenger aircraft to Minsk and arrest opposition journalist Raman Pratasievi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident has not been properly investigated because Belarusian officials denied international experts access to key evidence and witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International Civil Aviation Organization Council determined that the bomb threat against Ryanair Flight 4978 \u201cwas deliberately false and endangered its safety, and furthermore that the threat was communicated to the flight crew upon the instructions of senior government officials of Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs neither a bomb nor evidence of its existence was found during pre-departure screening in Athens, Greece, and after various searches of the aircraft in Belarus and Lithuania, it is considered that the bomb threat was deliberately false. Knowingly communicating false information which endangers the safety of an aircraft in flight is an offence under Article 1 (1) (e) of the Montr\u00e9al Convention,\u201d it said<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
