September 16, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka lashed out at Poland in interview with the Razvedchik magazine published by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service over its decision to close the border with Belarus, which hosts the Zapad-2025 maneuvers involving Russian troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interview came days before Warsaw announced its decision today not to open the border after the close of the exercise on September 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler said he had “no illusions about the early resumption of dialogue\u201d with Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPoles and Belarusians are not enemies, but Warsaw continues to make unfounded claims and accusations against Belarus,” state-run media outlets quoted him as saying. “It has offered refuge to our \u2018fugitives\u2019 [exiled Belarusian opponents of the government], backing them politically and informationally to advance its own agenda,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warsaw threatens Minsk with sanctions, militarization and support for Belarusian exiled solidarity initiatives, along with other forms of disruption, the Belarusian ruler claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka accused western countries of militarization, a shift to \u201cblatantly aggressive\u201d policies and \u201cmadness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy mine borders today, spend millions on building iron fences that migrants can climb over in a matter of minutes? Millions of dollars have been invested, half of it stolen, borders mined, armies swelling with troops and equipment,\u201d the politician said. Border residents are at risk and animals are suffering, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have always offered and continue to offer to live in good neighborly relations. They [Poles] don’t want to. They are doing things at the border that are beyond comprehension. Unfortunately, our relations with Poland are far from ideal, and it’s not our fault,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland closed all checkpoints on the shared border with Belarus on September 12, citing risks posed by Zapad-2025 that started on that day. Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwi\u0144ski said Warsaw would reopen the border when officials are fully confident that Belarus does not pose a direct threat to Poland or its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Poland and the Baltic states withdrew from the Ottawa Treaty, an international agreement banning the use and production of anti-personnel landmines, to strengthen border security along their eastern frontiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
