September 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Maryna Adamovi\u010d, the wife of Belarusian opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d, has told<\/a> the EU-based Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta. Evropa<\/em> that she contacted the police in connection with his disappearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Adamovi\u010d, the police accepted her statement, though it took a very long time. \u201cThey kept me for three hours on a Sunday evening,\u201d she said. \u201cWhile I was sitting there, I observed that everyone was so young and green, it was scary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wife said it was hard to expect any updates from the police, as wardens had kept Statkievi\u010d in complete isolation during his imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will still look for him in every possible way. I really hope that the regime will not want to cancel the deal with the Americans, which allowed political prisoners to be released. This gives me hope that Mika\u0142aj is alive and will return,\u201d Adamovi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statkievi\u010d was arrested in May 2020 and sentenced to 14 years in prison. He was released on September 11 along with 51 other prisoners in a deal between the US administration and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka. The condition for their release was that the prisoners leave the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statkievi\u010d refused to emigrate to Lithuania, where the group was taken, and instead returned to Belarus. He was recorded by CCTV cameras on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border between the Kamienny \u0141oh and Medininkai checkpoints that afternoon. There has been no exact information about his fate since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the politician\u2019s allies, it is highly likely that Statkievi\u010d was taken back to the penal colony in H\u0142ybokaje.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
