September 12, Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>. The forced deportation of pardoned regime critics without IDs violates basic human rights and international law, lawyer Leanid Maroza\u016d, an aide to Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, said today. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He made this remark after more than 50 designated political prisoners were pardoned yesterday following Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s meeting with John Coale, US deputy special envoy to Ukraine, and immediately taken to Lithuania without passports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus, as a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, \u201cis obliged to ensure freedom of movement and respect the right to citizenship,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deportation could potentially constitute a forcible transfer of population under the Rome Statute and should be subject to international legal assessment, Maroza\u016d stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s team plans to \u201cdraw the attention of international organizations to this flagrant violation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some prisoners reportedly had their passports confiscated before deportation, while the Committee for State Security (KGB) agents tore up the passport of prominent opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Dziadok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those pardoned include prominent Belarusian opposition figures and journalists, as well as 14 foreigners. All released people were taken to Lithuania, except for opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d, who refused to leave Belarus. His whereabouts are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
