September 11, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Lithuania must stay consistent in its policies after dealing with Belarus during Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s 30-year rule, Foreign Minister K\u0119stutis Budrys has said, defending the European Union\u2019s sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He made this comment while addressing a conference on regional security in Vilnius. He stressed that Lithuania\u2019s current priority is for neighboring Belarus to remain an independent country and to coexist peacefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We must not rush around and lose the political momentum in these decisions. There are specific reasons why we imposed sanctions on Belarus,\u201d Budrys said, specifically mentioning the disputed 2020 election, the government crackdown on critics, Minsk\u2019s support for Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine, complicity in war crimes and facilitation of the migration crisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easing Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s international isolation, along with the potential exchange of political prisoners for the lifting of sanctions, is a very dangerous path with no guarantees of improvement within Belarus, the politician noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The release of all jailed dissidents should be the starting point for any discussions with Minsk, he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
