September 8, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has called for urgent action in a post on X “to save the lives of the regime\u2019s hostages” following the reports of another dissident’s death behind bars in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian national Andrei Podnebenny, given a lengthy prison term in a politically-motivated case, died five days ago in Mahilo\u016d’s Prison No 15, his mother Valentina Podnebennaya said on Facebook earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides Podnebenny, several other designated political prisoners died in recent years behind bars, including Vitold A\u0161urak, Mika\u0142aj Klimovi\u010d, Ale\u015b Pu\u0161kin, Vadzim Chra\u015bko, Ihar Lednik, Alaksandar Kulini\u010d, Dmitry Shletgauer and Valancin \u0160termier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 8, human rights defenders identified at least 1,195 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
