September 3, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarus generates 40 percent of its electricity from nuclear power, with each unit at the Belarusian nuclear power plant (NPP) supplying about 28 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per day, the energy ministry\u2019s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NPP has generated 50 billion kWh of electricity since November 2020, replacing 13.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by almost 20 million tons, it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electricity prices in Belarus have climbed by 13.3 percent since 2023 despite government promises that nuclear electricity generation would keep them stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NPP in Astraviec was built some 10 miles off the Lithuanian border with a Russian loan. Units 1 and 2 started commercial operation in June 2021 and November 2023, respectively. Lithuania views the plant as unsafe and describes it as a \u201cgeopolitical weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Belarus and Russia reportedly started discussing adding another unit to the Astraviec plant or constructing another two-unit nuclear power plant in Mahilo\u016d region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
