September 2, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>New instances of politically motivated persecution were recorded in Belarus between August 30 and September 1, including an arrest, the trial of a prominent journalist and a criminal case against an exiled activist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Biaroza, Brest region, a pensioner was sentenced to 10 days in jail for defying the authorities\u2019 ban on leaving homes during Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s June 13 visit to the town, the local branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. The woman had gone into the street to complain to the head of state about low pensions. While in detention, she was deprived of a mattress and food parcels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Court will resume the trial of journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161 on September 4, according to Siarhiej Vahana\u016d, the grandfather of Ilja\u0161\u2019s imprisoned wife, who wrote about the case on Facebook. Ilja\u0161 is accused of facilitating extremism and discrediting Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings have been launched against Maksim \u0160abucki, a former fighter of the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment and former member of the opposition Coordination Council. He faces more than 20 serious charges frequently used by the authorities against their opponents, including conspiracy to seize power, forming a criminal group, calling for sanctions, extremism, and participation in a foreign conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition activist Alena Malino\u016dskaja has not been released after completing a four-year prison sentence, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. She may now face additional charges related to her role in the postelection protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security officers have also been holding \u201cpreventive conversations\u201d with Belarusians living abroad during their visits to Belarus, warning them about potential prosecution under the article on high treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 1, human rights defenders recognized at least 1,188 political prisoners in the country. The real number is believed to be significantly higher, as many cases remain undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent decrease in documented cases is linked to the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to block access to its online trial schedule and database of rulings, which have been inaccessible since early April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
