August 10, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> National Anti-Crisis Management (NAM) head Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka has urged Belarusians to realize that Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka is trying to destroy the opposition “by hook or by crook, using the most powerful apparatus of force, repression and intelligence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the New Belarus conference in Warsaw, \u0141atu\u0161ka said, \u201c\u0141uka\u0161enka is trying to destroy the alternative Belarusians have chosen in the person of our president-elect [\u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja], the United Transitional Cabinet, the elected Coordination Council and numerous initiatives and organizations created by Belarusian society.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By undermining public initiative, \u0141uka\u0161enka \u201cwants to come to an agreement with the United States and Europe, so that they turn a blind eye and forget about his crimes,\u201d \u0141atu\u0161ka said. \u201cThis has happened more than once over the decades. But as long as our citizen movement, democratic institutions and civic initiatives exist, he will not succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his opinion, if the regime manages to ruin the pro-democracy institutions, this would totally correspond with \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s interests. \u201cHe would have a clear field for communication [with the West], for repeating what he has been doing for decades,\u201d \u0141atu\u0161ka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe hear some voices that our goals are too ambitious, that they are unattainable, that we need to lower our expectations and almost admit defeat. Seriously? I want to address these talking points once and for all. Those who have lost their battle, given up on their goals and lowered their bar are out. This marathon is not for everyone. It is your right to drop out of the race. But do not try to slow down and stop others,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
