August 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> More than 100,000 cases of repression have been recorded in Belarus over the past five years, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the disputed presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the lack of complete data, the number of those persecuted may be significantly higher, human rights activists said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past five years, the number of political prisoners has increased by a factor of 47, from 25 to 1,187. Several dozen more people have been placed in temporary detention facilities under the Administrative Offenses Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since August 2020, 4,064 people, including 776 women, have received the political prisoner status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 8,532 people have become defendants in criminal cases, with at least 7,299 receiving politically motivated sentences. A total of 180 people have been convicted in absentia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna knows of at least 1,765 women convicted under criminal articles. Currently, there are 178 female political prisoners in the country, including pensioners, women with serious illnesses and mothers with many children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2020, 360 political prisoners have been pardoned. Eight of them have been deported directly from prison, despite not having citizenship other than Belarusian. Human rights activists call this a \u201cnew instrument of political pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eight political prisoners have died in prison. They are Alaksandar Kulini\u010d, Ihar Lednik, Vadzim Chra\u015bko, Ale\u015b Pu\u0161kin, Mika\u0142aj Klimovi\u010d, Vitold A\u0161urak, Dmitry Shletgauer and Valancin \u0160termier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
