August 5, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus\u2019 human rights defenders documented one new extremism-related case between August 2 and 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police in Belarus arrested last week and brought extremism-related charges against dissident doctor Rus\u0142an Badam\u0161yn, a neurologist who was serving a three-year restricted freedom sentence in home confinement for allegedly taking part in protests against election fraud in 2020, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Badam\u0161yn\u2019s wife had also been convicted of violent disorder in connection with her alleged role in postelection protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Badam\u0161yn has spent 63 days in jail for minor offenses since August 2020. He was fired from the National Scientific and Practical Center of Neurosurgery in 2021 for his political activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus added 31 titles to the list of books banned for distribution, the information ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of them, the collection of solidarity poems \u201cHere They Are, and Here We Are,\u201d contains works supporting protests in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk also banned \u201cInvisible Monsters\u201d by Chuck Palahniuk, \u201cThe Secret History\u201d by Donna Tartt, \u201cMarina\u2019s 30th Love\u201d by Vladimir Sorokin and other popular books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monitors documented 64 instances of politically-motivated persecution, including arrests and searches, in Belarus in July, Viasna said in a monthly report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe human rights situation in Belarus remains critical. Reprisals against participants in the 2020 protests, as well as the criminal prosecution of dissidents, members of civic initiatives, journalists, human rights defenders and lawyers continue,\u201d the center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 4, human rights defenders identified at least 1,182 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher due to many undocumented cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recent decrease in documented cases is attributed to the Supreme Court blocking access to its electronic schedule of trials and database of rulings since early April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
