July 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The combined external debt in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) increased by $20.7 billion, or 3.9 percent, year on year, the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) has reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of April 1, 2025, the total debt amounted to $554.9 billion, with $17.09 billion in Armenia, $37.41 billion in Belarus, $170.48 billion in Kazakhstan, $12.41 billion in Kyrgyzstan and $317.55 billion in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLong-term external debt prevails in all EAEU member states, ranging between 56 percent and 87 percent. Short-term external borrowing is mainly observed in the banking sector,\u201d the EEC said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure of external debt varied across EAEU member states. As of April 1, the debt of government bodies prevailed in Armenia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan; the debt on direct investments (intercompany lending) prevailed in Kazakhstan; and the debt of other sectors prevailed in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relative to GDP, external debt increased slightly across the EAEU member states in the first quarter of 2025. This development interrupted the decline in external debt that had been observed since 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In absolute terms, external debt has increased since 2010. Notable growth was observed in Armenia (2.7 times), Belarus (1.3 times), Kazakhstan (1.4 times) and Kyrgyzstan (2.5 times). Russia reported a decrease in external debt. As of April 1, 2025, it constituted 65 percent of the 2010 level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only Russia could boast high coverage of external debt by its international reserves (204 percent). In other countries, the ratio was: 23 percent in Armenia, 26.9 percent in Belarus, 29.4 percent in Kazakhstan and 43.3 percent in Kyrgyzstan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
