July 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday signed off on a bill<\/a> withdrawing Poland from the Ottawa Treaty, an international agreement that prohibits the use and production of anti-personnel landmines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the Polish defense minister said rejecting the treaty was crucial for regional security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to PAP<\/em>, such Russian neighbors as Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have either started or already completed pulling out of the deal recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the end of June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also signed a decree withdrawing from the convention. In addition, Lithuania and Finland declared their intention to resume producing anti-personnel mines and support Ukraine with them,\u201d it reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, Belarus signaled that it would not terminate the agreement but rather rely on Russian nuclear weapons for defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Minister Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d commented on anti-Ottawa sentiments in Europe by saying, \u201cWe will not succeed in this arms race, but we are undertaking some forms of cooperation with our closest partners and allies\u2014with Russia\u2014on nuclear deterrence, deterrence with ballistic weapons. This is much cheaper and more effective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat also accused Poland and the Baltic States of hypocrisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus joined the Ottawa Convention in 2003, around the same time as Lithuania. Russia is not a party to the treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
