{"id":147899,"date":"2025-07-23T19:12:41","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T16:12:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/147899\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"opposition-politician-raises-alarm-over-dominance-of-russian-books-in-belarus","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/147899\/","title":{"rendered":"Opposition politician raises alarm over dominance of Russian books in Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>July 23, <em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Pavie\u0142 Barko\u016dski, a member of the opposition United Transitional Cabinet, has expressed concern over the ongoing Russification of Belarus, highlighting the overwhelming dominance of Russian-language books in the country\u2019s market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fewer than 900 book titles were published in the Belarusian language in 2024, with a total print run of approximately three million copies. \u201cThat\u2019s about one book per three Belarusians,\u201d he said, citing data from the National Book Chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey publish twice as many books in Belarusian as in English, but far fewer than in Russian\u2026 This is the result of a Russification policy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that most Belarusian-language books are reprints of classic literature required for school curricula. \u201cIf we exclude those, the statistics become even more disastrous,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven now, independent Belarusian publishers in exile are matching their counterparts inside Belarus in both the number of titles and total circulation\u2014and they are even ahead in publishing new titles,\u201d Barko\u016dski said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He praised the resilience of Belarus-based publishers committed to the Belarusian language but warned that without government support, the country\u2019s native-language publishing industry risks extinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/ru\/news\/143257\/\">Belarusian society resists Russification \u2013 exiled academic<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>July 23, Pozirk.
