July 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Polish Sejm has approved the government’s proposal to extend restrictions on acceptance of asylum requests at the border with Belarus for another 60 days, following the first extension adopted on May 21, interia.pl <\/em>reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government pointed to significant migration pressure at its external borders, asserting that further action is essential to maintain stability in Poland and the European Union. A total of 381 Polish MPs supported this position, with only 19 voting against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland stopped accepting asylum requests submitted at the border with Belarus on March 27. However, those filing applications at border guard offices located near the Polish-Belarusian border constitute a small percentage of the total number of applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland thwarted at least 6,478 irregular crossings by third-country foreigners via Belarus from March 27 to May 25, with more than 8,000 attempts from May 26 to July 22, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2019s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to enter the European Union surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, \u0141uka\u0161enka claimed that foreigners were traveling to the EU because they were \u201cinvited there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
