July 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> It makes no sense to discuss the resumption of Belarusian potash fertilizer transit through Lithuania, as these products are under the United States and European Union’s sanctions, Ram\u016bnas Dilba, an aide to Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da, has told \u017dini\u0173 Radijas<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if US and EU sanctions were lifted, Lithuania has legal tools under national law to \u201cprotect its interests,\u201d BNS<\/em> reports, citing him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we see that a company is profiting from fertilizer transit and, perhaps indirectly, funding [Russia\u2019s] military actions [in Ukraine] or strengthening the [Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka] regime, then this runs counter to Lithuania\u2019s national interests, in which case we could apply our national legal instruments when making decisions,\u201d Dilba said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comments follow earlier reports of an offer by the Klaip\u0117da-based Biri\u0173 Krovini\u0173 Terminalas (BKT) to resume fertilizer transit via Lithuania in exchange for dropping legal action against Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four days ago, the Lithuanian government denied receiving this proposal, stressing that Belarusian fertilizer transit is out of the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sanctions-hit Belarusian potash giant Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij holds 30 percent in the BKT. The company has been under the EU sanctions since 2021 over allegations of human rights abuses. Its former CEO Ivan Ha\u0142avaty was also sanctioned for his links to \u0141uka\u0161enka and his family members as well as alleged involvement in politically-motivated reprisals against his company\u2019s employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the European Court of Justice rejected appeals from Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij, Ha\u0142avaty and the Belarusian Potash Company against the EU sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
