July 21, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/strong>. <\/em>John Coale, who serves as deputy to Keith Kellogg, US President Donald Trump\u2019s special envoy for Ukraine, has shared details of his April meeting with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka with Politico<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coale’s trip to Belarus was reportedly necessary to build rapport with the Belarusian ruler and seal the deal on the release of US-Belarusian lawyer Juryj Ziankovi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe [\u0141uka\u0161enka] does want better relations with the United States,\u201d the diplomat told Politico <\/em>while commenting on drinking vodka with the Belarusian ruler, who, in his opinion, seemed interested in being included in negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few months later, Coale was part of a US delegation headed by Kellogg, that met \u0141uka\u0161enka in Minsk first time in five years after the latter declared himself the winner of the disputed 2020 election. Following this visit, Minsk released 14 prisoners, including the prominent opposition figure Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus is under US sanctions, but Minsk has allegedly been involved in non-public contacts with Washington for a year, with engagement beginning under the administration of President Joe Biden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Trump\u2019s first term, the United States sought to improve diplomatic relations with Minsk, but those efforts were put on hold after \u0141uka\u0161enka declared himself the winner of the 2020 election and cracked down hard on protesters and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
