July 7, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Freezing-level temperatures during long cold spells in May and June have harmed Belarus\u2019 crops, the country\u2019s climate official Volha Bak\u0142anava has told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fruit trees and shrubs, as well as agricultural crops in peatlands and lowlands, were particularly affected. At nighttime, the air temperature dropped to between 0 degrees Celsius and -5C (in Palesie, to between -9C and -10C).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brest region\u2019s crops were hit the hardest. \u201cThe impact of frosts was aggravated, as the prevalence of warm weather in March and April accelerated the growth of winter crops, perennial grasses and fruit trees compared with annual averages,\u201d Bak\u0142anava said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

March was the warmest after World War II, with temperatures exceeding standard levels by 4.4\u00b0. In April, scientists observed both abnormally warm and abnormally cold weather. New monthly daytime highs were documented in Vierchniad\u017avinsk and Jeziary\u0161\u010da, and new monthly nighttime lows were recorded in Kry\u010da\u016d and M\u015bcis\u0142a\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May\u2019s temperature was 2.5C below the standard average (10.9C versus 13.4C). According to Bak\u0142anava, such a cold May occurs once every eight years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
