July 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus from July 3 to 6 as the press office of Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja reported attempts to infiltrate the team assembled by her dissident husband Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Persons claiming to be popular tabloid journalists tried to obtain information about his current activities, it noted. The Strana Dlya Zhizni project later said that Belarusian or Russian secret services had set up a fake website to collect the <\/em>personal data of volunteers wishing to help Cichano\u016dski. Law enforcers may be trying to collect data to file criminal charges against the activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mikita Samaryn, whose trial opened five days ago, is accused of threatening violence to a policeman and disobeying prison authorities, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Samaryn had left Belarus in 2021 after a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence passed against him but returned later only to be arrested in late March. Rights defenders consider his persecution politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karyna Malino\u016dskaja, Ludmi\u0142a Licha\u010de\u016dskaja, Natalla Antonava and Ta\u0107ciana Makiejeva were among those pardoned on May 9, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least eight regime critics have been forcefully deported from Belarus since 2020, including Alena Ma\u016d\u0161uk, Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski, Natalla Dulina, Kiry\u0142 Ba\u0142achona\u016d, Siarhiej \u0160elih as well as journalists Aleh Hru\u017adzi\u0142ovi\u010d, Andrej Ku\u017ani\u010dyk and Ihar Karniej. They are Belarusian nationals without any other citizenship, Viasna noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 8,421 people have faced politically-motivated criminal persecution in Belarus since 2020 with 7,116 convicted and 33 set for forced psychiatric treatment, according to Viasna. Rights defenders added 183 new names to the political prisoners list in the first half of 2025 with 29 additions last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 7, human rights defenders identified at least 1,160 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
