June 26, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian officials should be held accountable for human rights abuse and support of Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine, Latvia\u2019s Foreign Minister Baiba Bra\u017ee has said at the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat made this statement after Nils Mui\u017enieks, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, presented his report to the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva earlier today. Belarus\u2019 official delegation did not attend the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic countries, Bra\u017ee condemned what Minsk referred to as a presidential election earlier this year, noting that it fell short of international standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reprisals continue in Belarus with trials targeting exiled activists and dissidents facing forced psychiatric treatment, the politician stressed, demanding the release of nearly 1,200 people imprisoned in politically-motivated cases and an end to the crackdown on regime critics and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk should also stop facilitating illegal migration crisis at the European Union\u2019s border, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
