June 26, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The human rights situation in Belarus remains grave, with no signs of progress, Nils Mui\u017enieks, UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, has told the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian officials ignored the rapporteur\u2019s requests to visit the country or meet with him in Geneva, he noted while presenting his report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mui\u017enieks added that Minsk tended to be formal in written communications without giving him any information. \u201cI am also constantly trying to involve other mandate holders in my communication with the Belarusian authorities so that there is no accusation of selectivity or subjectivity,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 official delegation did not attend the presentation by Mui\u017enieks. Representatives of Albania, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Ukraine participated in the discussion. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HRC established the mandate of the special rapporteur on Belarus in 2012. Mui\u017enieks was elected last October following the six-year tenure by Ana\u00efs\u00a0Marin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
