June 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Estonian President Alar Karis has signed a bill to withdraw his country from the Ottawa Treaty, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Karis’ press office, the move is dictated by the deteriorating security situation. The denunciation of the agreement would give Tallinn greater flexibility and freedom in choosing the weapons and solutions it may use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Estonian parliament passed the bill on June 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 24, Latvian President Edgars Rink\u0113vi\u010ds signed a similar bill, citing threats from Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, in March, the defense ministers of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia issued a joint statement recommending that their countries withdraw from the Ottawa Treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d commented on the potential withdrawal of Poland and the Baltic states from the convention by saying that Minsk \u201cshould be on guard, but . . . should not take the same militarized approaches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus joined the Ottawa Treaty on September 3, 2003. The decision came into force on March 1, 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
