June 12, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Latvia\u2019s lawmakers may include provisos concerning legal entities in a bill drafted to ban the acquisition of real estate in the country by Belarusians and Russians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parliament\u2019s legal commission passed the third reading of the bill today, BNN <\/em>reported, citing LETA<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to individuals, the ban may apply to legal entities registered in Belarus and Russia, as well as to legal entities controlled by their nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 9, Lauma Paeg\u013ckalna of the Latvian Ministry of Justice stated that the bill \u201crestricting transactions that threaten national security\u201d envisaged a complete ban on the acquisition of real estate in the country for all nationals of Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The declared aim was to prevent unchecked influence on the economy, which the concentration of Russians, Belarusians and their capital in Latvia may entail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who already own real estate would not lose it, and people could inherit property also, Paeg\u013ckalna explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original version of the bill, which was tabled by the New Unity, contained a clause saying the ban on real estate transactions did not apply to people with a permanent residence permit in Latvia or a resident status in the European Union. However, by the second reading the clause had been removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
