June 10, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has linked Belarus\u2019 potato shortage to discontent with his price controls when speaking at the Bie\u0142aru\u015bfilm studio on June 10, according to a video clip published by his press office\u2019s unofficial Telegram channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka said the State Control Committee has investigated \u201csome figures\u201d and established the causes of the shortage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was about politics. There were enough potatoes, but in some places, they [producers or retailers] held back [from selling] to show that the president interfered with pricing and caused it [shortage and high potato prices]. And when he [presumably a security officer] went there and put handcuffs on their table, the potatoes reappeared [on the counter],\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not name any people or specify how the potatoes were \u201cheld back,\u201d but said that Belarus had \u201cenough of everything,\u201d including potatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 8, he made it clear that the potato shortage might persist for a month until new harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that farmers are selling their potatoes in Russia because of considerably higher prices there. He added that farmers needed cash to buy fertilizers and plant potatoes as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also defended farmers selling food in Russia. \u201cOf course, peasants need cash. If they don\u2019t sell potatoes [abroad] and don\u2019t get hard currency, we will have to support them from the [state] budget. We don\u2019t want this. Our teachers, doctors and pensioners are not that rich [to afford potatoes at higher prices].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December, the government introduced potato export licenses for three months and in March extended the measure by another three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, Belarus\u2019 potato harvest was 22.5-percent lower than in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
