May 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Belarusian human rights defenders have declared eight more people as political prisoners, including Vasil Hra\u010dycha, who fought Russia in Ukraine, and opposition activist Pavie\u0142 Bialucin, says a statement posted by the Viasna Human Rights Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both are currently held in custody. The new additions also include Andrej Sitnika\u016d, Siarhiej Dziehciarenka, Alaksandar Alaksandra\u016dski, Ja\u016dhien Bielendyk, Alaksandar Byka\u016d and Piotr Filipovi\u010d imprisoned on charges ranging from defaming Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials to inciting hatred and association with groups that Minsk branded extremist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitnika\u016d is serving a four-year sentence, Dziehciarenka was given three years and five months behind bars, while the terms of others remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna, Respect-Protect-Fulfill, Human Constanta, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva and the Belarusian Helsinki Committee signed the statement, demanding the immediate release of all political prisoners and the end of reprisals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of May 21, human rights defenders identified at least 1,189 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
