May 13, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Hanna Kandracienka, released in July 2024 after serving a prison term in a politically-motivated case, died of cancer in early February, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of reprisals documented in Belarus from May 9 to 12 included extremism-related criminal charges against Mikita \u0141osik, younger brother of jailed RFE\/RL<\/em> journalist Ihar \u0141osik, accused of sharing information with the now defunct Bie\u0142aruski Hajun defense monitoring project. He has been held at a pre-trial detention center in Viciebsk since mid-April, Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry declared the outlawed Belarusian Social-Democratic Party (Hramada) an extremist group last week, listing its exiled Chairman Ihar Barysa\u016d and Deputy Chairman Ihar Mas\u0142o\u016dski as members. Law enforcers reportedly seized Hramada\u2019s merchandise from the home of a former member\u2019s parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teenagers, who showed inappropriate gestures during the May 9 fireworks in Mahilo\u016d were forced to apologize and may face preventive police supervision, a pro-government Telegram channel said, showing three girls with blurred faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) sealed the Minsk apartment owned by exiled photojournalist Hienad\u017a Vieracinski, he told Pozirk<\/em>. The seal prohibits entry and says that the KGB has seized the premises. Vieracinki interpreted the incident as a part of a criminal case against him, noting that he had not been informed of the procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prison authorities at one of the Belarusian penal colonies have started forcing people jailed in politically-motivated cases to write pardon requests to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka after a break of a few months, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Fiaduda, sentenced to a lengthy prison term for alleged conspiracy to seize power, considers such requests to be pointless, said Belarus-US lawyer Juryj Ziankovi\u010d recently released with the help of Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of May 13, human rights defenders identified at least 1,175 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
