{"id":137665,"date":"2025-05-12T13:13:24","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T10:13:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/137665\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"warsaw-investigating-imports-of-sanctioned-belarusian-plywood","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/137665\/","title":{"rendered":"Warsaw investigating imports of sanctioned Belarusian plywood"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>May 12, <em>Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Polish prosecutors and customs authorities have launched an investigation into customs fraud and violation of the European Union\u2019s sanctions regarding the imports of birch plywood from Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An unnamed Polish company imported Belarusian birch plywood via intermediaries from Kazakhstan in circumvention of the EU sanctions, the Customs and Tax Service of Poland&#8217;s Mazowieckie Voivodeship Customs said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polish law enforcers arrested three suspects and searched their homes as well as offices and warehouses across the Mazowieckie, Wielkopolskie and Podlaskie Voivodships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police seized accounting documents, electronic equipment and plywood, ordering tests of goods samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warsaw prosecutors charged those arrested with customs fraud and sanctions evasion. They were placed in custody for three months and may face up to three years in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their assets have been seized to cover possible fines and profits generated from criminal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, an investigation by the Earthsight environmental non-profit confirmed supplies of Belarusian plywood to the EU and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years ago, the EU banned the import of Belarusian wood products, such as lumber, briquettes, fuel pellets, plywood and wood boards, to punish Minsk for its complicity in the Russian war against Ukraine.
