May 7, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Belarusian human rights defenders documented 50 cases of politically-motivated persecution in April with 41 additions to the <\/em><\/strong>political prisoners list, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports, noting that a lack of access to court schedules has complicated documenting reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of late April, the number of people, whom rights groups consider political prisoners exceeded 1,200 including 159 women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since May 2020, rights groups added 3,920 names to this list. A total of 2,189 men and 572 women have already been released after serving their sentences or a change of preventive measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 8,234 people have been prosecuted on political grounds since 2020, with 6,940 convicted and at least 33 sent for compulsory treatment, the report noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of May 7, human rights defenders identified at least 1,189 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
