April 11, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>A trade war triggered by US President Donald Trump\u2019s sweeping tariffs has accelerated deglobalization and the strengthening of regional alliances, economist Ale\u015b Alachnovi\u010d said in a video posted to \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s Telegram channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“\u0141uka\u0161enka has already isolated Belarus from many democratic countries as a result of the post-2020 political crackdown and his participation in the full-scale war on the side of Russia. The new international reality ties Belarus to Russia even stronger on the geopolitcal map of the world. In the long run, even if [power] transition starts in Belarus, it may remain in the Russian sphere of influence for a long time. Maybe it’s the key impact of Washington’s current decision-making,” Alachnovi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on the immediate effect for Belarusians, the economist said the unpredictability of the US administration made a recession in America and a slowdown among its key trade partners more likely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The trade war is seen as a negative shock for global demand,” he stressed. “Lower trade means lower transportation and lower demand for different fuels. A barrel of Brent oil has fallen by 16 percent in a few days. This information is negative for Belarus and means a reduction in revenues from refining Russian oil. In the long run, if the oil price remains low, this may limit the Kremlin’s ability to subsidize the Belarusian economy.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 2, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing new tariffs on all goods entering the US. Nearly all former Soviet countries were affected, with the exception of Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After days of market turmoil and warnings of recession, he announced a 90-day pause for most countries except China. Overall, Trump has imposed 145 percent tariffs on Chinese goods since taking office. Earlier today, China has raised its tariffs on US products to 125 percent, The Guardian<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
