April 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Katolik.life<\/em> reported that Catholic priest Hienrych Aka\u0142atovi\u010d, who was sentenced to 11 years on a high treason charge, had been accused of “spying for Poland and the Vatican.” The imprisoned cleric dismissed the accusation<\/a>, saying it was a trial “of the whole Catholic Church in Belarus.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A show trial was held for students at Brest Polytechnic College, resulting in a restricted freedom sentence for a man who had allegedly insulted the head of state, the Brest District Court reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Information designated “The Belarusian Journalist’s Handbook” and “Belarus on the Rift” as extremist books. It also banned several social media accounts, including the Belarusian Youth Hub and the Belarusian World Diaspora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former political prisoners said medical care in prisons deteriorated and therapeutic dental care was almost nonexistent, The Lancet<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viciebsk’s Penal Colony No. 3 reduced the number of prisoners’ phone calls from four to two per month, without any explanation, Mayday.Team reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of April 9, human rights defenders identified at least 1,202 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, Viasna reported eight months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
