March 31, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Theodoros Rousopoulos, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), described the disappearance of An\u017ealika Melnikava, speaker of the Coordination Council (CC), and her daughters as an alarming development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cThe [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka regime has a long history of using repression and intimidation against its opponents, making every such disappearance a matter of grave concern,\u201d he stressed<\/a> in a statement on pace.coe.int<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rousopoulos joined the call by Ryszard Petru, the PACE general rapporteur for a democratic Belarus, urging anyone with information about the whereabouts of Mielnikava and her daughters to immediately contact Polish investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka of the opposition transition cabinet said he had not heard from Mielnikava since March 25. She reportedly left Poland for the United Kingdom, without notifying her associates. No further details are available at the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka pointed out that opposition leaders are priority targets for Belarus\u2019 and Russia\u2019s secret services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stanis\u0142ava Hli\u0144nik, vice-speaker and granddaughter of the late Belarusian leader Stanis\u0142a\u016d \u0160u\u0161kievi\u010d, temporarily took over Mielnikava\u2019s responsibilities at the CC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
