March 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus does not need to adopt the same “militarized approaches” as its western neighbors that are considering withdrawal from the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention known as Ottawa Convention, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defense ministers of Poland and the three Baltic States announced the move four days ago, noting that anti-personnel mines are an effective and cheap defensive instrument amid increased military threats in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will not succeed in this arms race, but we are undertaking some forms of cooperation with our closest partners and allies \u2013  with Russia \u2013  on nuclear deterrence, deterrence with ballistic weapons. This is much cheaper and more effective,\u201d the foreign ministry\u2019s press office quoted Ry\u017eanko\u016d as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat also accused\u00a0Poland and the Baltic States of hypocrisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus joined the Ottawa Convention in 2003, around the same time as Lithuania. Russia is not a party to the treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
