March 14, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has confirmed plans to build a second nuclear power plant in Belarus as he addressed the Russian Federation Council in Moscow today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s all clear with mining, cryptocurrency and electric cars\u201d he said. “We started building housing for people, [it is] heated completely. . . by electricity. I supervised this project and I’ve been in these houses \u2013 it’s a miracle.\u201d Consumption has increased and Belarus needs more electricity, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe asked the Russians, if possible, to build a second power plant. We will build it ourselves, except for these important things – the reactor and the turbines which are manufactured here. . . We installed these basic units together, but we can do it ourselves now,” the Belarusian ruler said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, he suggested building the second nuclear plant in eastern Belarus to facilitate energy exports to neighboring Russia and Russia-held Ukrainian territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cderanged\u201d Baltic States that have recently disconnected from BRELL, a Soviet-era power grid that includes Belarus and Russia, will return to buying electricity generated in Belarus, he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few years, \u0141uka\u0161enka has frequently mentioned the second nuclear power plant. He also instructed officials to assess the feasibility of increasing the number of power units at the Astraviec nuclear power plant, located some 10 miles off the Lithuanian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The power plant was designed by Russia\u2019s Rosatom and built with a Russian loan. Lithuania views it as unsafe and describes it as a \u201cgeopolitical weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
