March 3, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has appointed his aide for the Hrodna region, former Interior Minister Juryj Karaje\u016d, as acting chairman of the Hrodna Regional Executive Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He fills the position left vacant by U\u0142adzimir Karanik, promoted to deputy prime minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka told Karanik to monitor the region and help Karaje\u016d, according to a video posted on \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s unofficial Telegram channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler directed his chief of staff, D\u017amitry Krutoj, to draft an edict appointing Karaje\u016d as chairman of the Hrodna Regional Executive Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karaje\u016d, born in North Ossetia (now Russia), stayed in Belarus after completing his service in the Soviet army. He served as interior minister from June 2019 to October 2020, and as \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s aide for the Hrodna region from October 2020 and until recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union and its allies have sanctioned him for the 2020 crackdown on peaceful protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karanik was appointed chairman of the Hrodna Regional Executive Committee in August 2020, when protests against electoral fraud and police brutality swept across the country. Prior to that, he served as minister of health for just over a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
