February 26, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The military alliance of Belarus and Russia is not a threat to any other countries, Foreign Minister Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d has told participants in the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEnough talk about the \u2018Russians are coming\u2019 threat. They are not coming anywhere farther – neither to Berlin nor to Paris. Don’t pour water on the rhetoric mill of defense industries and related political circles. I say this for NATO in particular,\u201d Belarusian state-run media quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cooperation between Minsk and Moscow is based on international law and is \u201cin strict compliance\u201d with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia will deploy Oreshnik ballistic missiles in Belarus exclusively for defense purposes, Ry\u017eanko\u016d said, describing the move as a forced one. “Back in the 1990s, Belarus trusted the Western countries and made a conscious choice in favor of giving up nuclear weapons without any conditions and reservations,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent security guarantees deal between Belarus and Russia, providing for defense of the Union State territory and border with \u201call available forces and means,\u201d including nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus, is part of the defense strategy, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuclear deterrence of potential external military aggression “makes our neighbors’ spending of billions of dollars on armaments useless,\u201d he argued, warning that there would be no winners in a nuclear war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the Belarusian delegation headed by Ry\u017eanko\u016d concludes its three-day visit to Geneva. It attended high-level events of the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) and the Conference on Disarmament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 19, the UN Human Rights Council will hold an interactive dialogue on human rights in Belarus, based on the first report of the Group of Experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report says that some rights violations \u201camount to international crimes in that they were committed intentionally as part of a widespread and systematic attack against a segment of the civilian population of Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
