February 21, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Sanctions hamper economic growth and sustainable development in the member countries of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Aleh Rumo of the upper house’s foreign affairs committee told the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Vienna yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Western sanctions failed to trigger the collapse of Belarus\u2019 economy which is growing thanks to diversified exports, import substitution and technological independence, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are aware that our economic development could have been more dynamic without the sanctions. It is also clear that Europeans suffer because of the restrictions,\u201d the state-run media reported, quoting the official as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMinsk considers mutually respectful dialogue as the only way to bridge differences and find joint solutions to emerging issues,\u201d Rumo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few years, democratic countries have imposed multiple restrictions on Belarus over human rights abuses, alleged vote rigging in the 2020 presidential election, a brutal crackdown on protesters, the forced landing of a Ryanair flight, a migration crisis at the European Union border, as well as support of Russia’s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian delegation is participating in the 24th winter session of the OSCE PA held in Austria following last year\u2019s debacle when it was denied entry to Romania, which banned them from the 31st annual OSCE PA session. Bucharest announced the ban in advance, citing Romania\u2019s opposition to Minsk\u2019s support of Russia\u2019s aggressive war on Ukraine as the reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
