February 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Some human rights violations committed by the Belarusian government amount to crimes against humanity, UN experts stated in a new report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government abused the civilian population on a mass scale to suppress all opposition to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s rule, they asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmong the most egregious violations documented are arbitrary arrests and detention on politically motivated grounds, which have become a fixture of the tactics of Belarusian authorities,\u201d the UN Human Rights Council said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe report found that men and women in detention had been routinely subjected to torture and ill-treatment, including beatings, electric shocks and threats to rape not only detainees but their partners as well,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In their inaugural report to the Human Rights Council, the Group of Experts\u2014established in April 2024\u2014revealed that detainees in Belarusian penal colonies endure discriminatory treatment aimed at punishment, ostensibly designed to crush political dissent. Repeated arrests are commonplace, with some individuals detained almost immediately after their release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security forces have been particularly brutal toward LGBT+ individuals, using violence and dehumanizing language. They also use enhanced digital surveillance tools to monitor online activity, frequently leading to prosecutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2020, such continuing violations have driven hundreds of thousands to flee Belarus, including lawyers, activists, civil society members, and journalists. Even in exile, many face charges and convictions under the Criminal Code for allegedly discrediting the state and conspiring to seize power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Group of Experts underscored the necessity of judicial and non-judicial accountability. Prosecuting those responsible for human rights abuses and crimes against humanity is crucial to dismantling Belarus\u2019 entrenched culture of impunity and ensuring justice for the victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
