February 7, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka “is cementing his system of governance to ensure that his offspring exists in the form that, in his imagination, suits the Belarusian people,” Ukrainian Ambassador-at-Large Ihor Kyzym told Ukrinform <\/em>shortly before announcing his retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Even if \u0141uka\u0161enka lost power\u2014resigned, changed his status and became chairman of the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, or simply went to live in Russia or in exile\u2014this would not mean his immediate replacement with democratic forces,” the diplomat said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine could expect a significant improvement in its relations with Belarus only if it defeated Russia in the war, he added. This would open “a window of opportunity for the democratization of Belarus,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And it is with this Belarus, democratic in the broad sense, that I see prospects for the development of our bilateral relations,” Kyzym stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“By hosting nuclear weapons, he [\u0141uka\u0161enka] has achieved nothing but has done harm to the security of his country. Moreover, everyone clearly understands that he will never fully possess these weapons. So if Moscow presses the ‘nuclear button,’ Belarus will be hit by retaliatory fire,” the envoy asserted, noting that he sees no logic in \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyiv appointed Kyzym special envoy for Belarus in February 2024. On Friday, the ambassador-at-large said on Facebook: “Today, solely for personal reasons, I have decided to retire from diplomatic service and take a ‘well-deserved rest.'”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From February 2017 to June 2023, Kyzym was Ukraine’s ambassador to Belarus, where he remained even after Russia launched an offensive on his country from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April 2023, Kyiv recalled him for consultations after \u0141uka\u0161enka met with the Russian-backed separatist leader of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
