February 1, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Judges in Belarus opened new trials on Friday against individuals opposing the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hrodna’s Kastry\u010dnicki District Court commenced public disorder hearings for Aleh and Nasta\u015bsia Bujak, Jury Chramovi\u010d and Ja\u016dhien Barel, Pravo Imeyut<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Viasna Human Rights Center, the trial of political prisoner Arciom Licievi\u010d, accused of creating an extremist group and insulting a government official, began in the Minsk City Court. He had previously been tried for violent disorder and calls for sanctions. The outcome of the trial was unknown. At the end of January 2025, the Committee for State Security (KGB) added the man to the “terrorist list.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Hrodna Regional Court continued the case of spouses Leanid and Antanina Cierabiej. They were arrested in June 2024 and accused of violent disorder, incitement to hatred, desecrating state symbols, and insulting and libeling the head of state, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also learned that on January 22, Minsk’s Masko\u016dski District Court began hearing a case against Christian choir member Daniel-\u0141andsej Kiejta, charged with violent disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Investigative Committee and Hrodna.life<\/em>, a tax evasion case has been initiated against Polish-based Stanis\u0142a\u016d Bujnicki, co-owner of the Fort company, which owns the premises of the Polish Consulate General in Hrodna. Bujnicki is believed to have Polish citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Mazyr, human rights activist U\u0142adzimir Cielapun was released after serving a short jail sentence, Viasna Homiel reported. He was arrested on January 15 and later tried for disseminating “extremist information products,” a charge often used for online posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, 16 people were added to the list of “persons involved in extremist activities.” It contains 4,900 entries, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of February 1, human rights defenders identified at least 1,245 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
