January 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Lithuanian MEP Petras Au\u0161trevi\u010dius has told Pozirk<\/em> that he nominated Belarusian political prisoner Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d for the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plain-clothes officers arrested Statkievi\u010d in Minsk on May 31, 2020. In December 2021, a judge sentenced him to 14 years in prison for allegedly organizing riots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, the Supreme Court upheld the sentence, and officers transferred him from a detention center in Homiel to H\u0142ybokaje’s Penal Colony No. 13, whose administration registered him as “prone to extremism.” In August, wardens placed him in solitary confinement for six months, and in September, they locked him in a punishment cell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has been held incommunicado since February 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the arrested founder and leader of the Viasna Human Rights Center, Ale\u015b Bialacki, as well as to the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties and the Russian human rights organization Memorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize twice: with Maryja Kale\u015bnikava and Vieranika Capka\u0142a in 2021 and also in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
