January 23, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, who is in Davos, has appealed to participants in a Coordinating Council hearing in Warsaw to find ways to bring Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka to justice for what she described as terror in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2020, authorities have prosecuted more than 8,000 Belarusian dissidents on criminal charges. More than 1,200 documented political prisoners behind bars. At least 12 people are arrested every day, including upon return from abroad, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition leader noted that political prisoners are often deprived of contact with the outside world or tortured. “And some, as we recently saw, are forced to record words on camera that a free person would never say,” she said in an apparent reference to interviews with imprisoned Radio Liberty<\/em> journalists posted on Youtube by the ONT<\/em> state-run television network earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She believes the judiciary has become a repressive institution, “same as the entire system of government agencies.” “They take revenge on the relatives of those forced to leave the country, fleeing persecution,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Cichano\u016dskaja, the regime poses a threat to its neighbors. “It continues to supply weapons to Russia, and Russian Shaheds regularly fly over Belarus, killing civilians in Ukraine,” she asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These actions represent state terror and are regarded as crimes against humanity by international organizations, Cichano\u016dskaja said. She called on participants to make sure that  “those who commit these crimes\u201d will not get away with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Of course, the hearings at the Coordination Council will not replace a court hearing. But they are an important step in this direction. Today, we must give full voice to the testimonies and accusations,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
