January 13, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Hasenberg transport company, owned by Lithuanian national Igor Udovitsky through Latvia’s Fortis Asset Management, seeks \u20ac15 billion in damages from Lithuania over the ban on the Belarusian potash fertilizers transit, Delfi <\/em>reports, citing LRT<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company filed the international arbitration case against Lithuania in October, according to the Lithuanian transport ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hasenberg and Garg\u017ed\u0173 gele\u017einkelis, another company owned by Udovitsky, claim that the ban on the Belarusian potash fertilizers transit caused a shortage of fertilizers and food in Africa and Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Swiss-based Hasenberg holds a 65-percent stake in Klaip\u0117da’s Biri\u0173 Krovini\u0173 Terminalas (BKT), in which the Belarusian potash giant Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij holds 30 percent and Udovitsky personally, 5 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hasenberg will reportedly use an agreement between Switzerland and Lithuania on the promotion and protection of investments to argue that the European Union’s sanctions can not apply to this case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij has been under the EU sanctions since 2021 over allegations of human rights abuses. Its former CEO Ivan Ha\u0142avaty was also sanctioned for his links to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his family members as well as alleged involvement in politically-motivated reprisals at the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few months ago, the European Court of Justice rejected appeals from Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij, Ha\u0142avaty and the Belarusian Potash Company (BPC) against EU sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bie\u0142aru\u015bkalij remains a key source of income for the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime and enjoys preferential treatment to export potash fertilizers, according to the ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
