January 10, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> United Transitional Cabinet (UTC) head \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja and Community of Democracies (CoD) Secretary General Mantas Adom\u0117nas have signed a memorandum of understanding, Cichano\u016dskaja’s adviser Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The signing took place during her visit to Warsaw. “The UTC agreed on cooperation in supporting democratic values in Belarus and helping Belarusians,” Via\u010dorka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pro-democracy forces’ plans include getting a formal status in the CoD. The aide noted that now, only official governments can be coalition members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is not just a symbolic gesture. It is also a step toward Belarus’ return to the path of democracy, human rights and justice. I realize this is a non-standard step for the Community, but we live in non-standard times. Such times require non-standard solutions,” Cichano\u016dskaja commented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition leader outlined the areas of cooperation with the coalition: maintaining the Belarusian issue on the agenda, assisting Belarusians in exile, preparing reforms for the country, supporting the independent media, fighting disinformation and increasing mobility and youth and student exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Via\u010dorka, Adom\u0117nas expressed his support for the pro-democracy movement and “declared the non-recognition of the January 26 farce, which \u0141uka\u0161enka conducts and calls elections.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coalition was founded in 2000 when delegations from 106 countries adopted the Warsaw Declaration Toward a Community of Democracies. Based on respect for shared democratic values, it is committed to concerted action to promote and protect democratic freedoms, strengthen democratic institutions, and expand political participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
