January 9, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The Armenian government has approved a bill to launch the country\u2019s accession to the European Union, news.am<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move comes amid the ongoing tensions within the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), after Armenia suspended its participation citing the bloc\u2019s failure to address \u201cexternal aggression at the borders of sovereign Armenia in 2021 and 2022.\u201d \u00a0Last year, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared that the CSTO posed a threat to Armenia\u2019s existence, sovereignty and statehood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan described the bill as a public initiative endorsed by 50,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In recent years, Armenia and the EU have had quite intense and dynamic relations,\u201d he said. The diplomat praised the EU for its strong political support for Armenia’s democracy, readiness to back its economic resilience and ensuring security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armenia is ready to be as close to the EU as the alliance deems possible, said Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, noting that eventual EU membership can be decided only by a referendum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yerevan has strained relations with Minsk. In June 2024, Pashinyan stated that neither he nor any other Armenian official would travel to Belarus as long as Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka was in power. The head of the Armenian government said that in connection with \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s remarks supportive of Azerbaijan at a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev earlier that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CSTO comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. Yerevan skipped its recent summits and ignored other events within the organization, accusing its individual members of \u201cplanning a war\u201d against Armenia together with Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
