December 30, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarus exported one million cubic meters of sawn timber in 2024, a record amount, Forestry Minister Alaksandar Kulik told STV<\/em> in an interview broadcast yesterday, without specifying the destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forestry sector employs 7,000 people, contributing taxes and $200 million to the economy, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paper, cardboard, wood for housing construction, furniture and other types of timber materials are now processed domestically in contrast to some five years ago when Belarus was still exporting unprocessed wood, the minister added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024 Belarus was the first country in Europe to introduce video surveillance in forests, which helped detect about 60 percent of wildfires and bring their number to a 10-year low, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forestry workers restored 27,000 hectares of forests in the outgoing year, Kulik said, but did not mention the deforested area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU restricted exports of Belarusian wood products in March 2022. The same month, the Forest Stewardship Council, an international organization promoting responsible management of forests, suspended certification for wood and forest products from Belarus and Russia over Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
