December 27, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> D\u017amitryj Kiru\u0161\u010danka, head of the Council of Ministers’ Defense and Law Enforcement Directorate, in a memo last month expressed concern about agencies\u2019 failure to fully use funds allocated for Chernobyl disaster relief, describing the issue as systematic.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only 427.4 million rubels (80.2 percent of the target) were spent in 2024. “The unspent allocations amounted to 105.6 million, which indicates the irrational planning of expenses and the insufficiently effective management of funds,\u201d Kiru\u0161\u010danka said in the November 25 report to Deputy Prime Minister Anatol Sivak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The memo also pointed out that an electronic system to monitor radiation, weather and fires at the exclusion zone has not been commissioned since 2019. “The system is operating in a limited test mode. We should intensify the development of options for solving its functional problems,” Kiru\u0161\u010danka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The largest man-made disaster in the history of mankind, occurred at 01:23 an April 26, 1986. Although the nuclear power plant is located in Ukraine, more than 70 percent of the fallout landed on Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government established the exclusion zone, the Pale\u015bsie State Radioecological Reserve, in 1988. It occupies 215,000 hectares in the Homiel region’s Brahin, Naro\u016dla and Chojniki districts, the areas most affected by the Chernobyl accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em> obtained a copy of the memo from the BelPol association of former Belarusian security officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
