December 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> D\u017amitryj Ku\u010duk, former chairman of the outlawed Belarusian Greens Party, has been sentenced to six years in prison and a fine of 20,000 rubels (some $6,100), Par\u0142amiencki Kana\u0142<\/em> reported<\/a> yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ku\u010duk was on trial in the Minsk City Court since November 22. Authorities accused him of violent disorder and calls for international sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ku\u010duk became the seventh party leader in Belarus to end up behind bars after he was arrested on February 16 while attempting to commemorate the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in front of the Russian embassy in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supreme Court dissolved The Greens in July 2023. Five months later, officials refused to register a group nominating Ku\u010duk as a candidate for parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, the politician had served 15 days in jail after he and others sought official permission to hold a protest rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
