December 23, Pozirk.<\/strong> The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has suggested extending national sanctions against Belarusians and Russians until May 2026, LRT<\/em> reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ministry argued that as Russia’s war against Ukraine continued, the reasons for the restrictions were still valid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia’s actions have a significant negative impact on security across Europe, not just the European Union and NATO, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with BNS<\/em>, Seimas Chairman Saulius Skvernelis said the restrictive measures could be tightened. “I have no doubt that after the so-called elections in Belarus we will have a huge challenge. The issue of sanctions and their scope, especially with regard to Belarus, will probably change, but not in the direction of their reduction. This is connected with the threat to our national security,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Vilnius suspended the acceptance of applications for Schengen and national visas from Russian and Belarusian citizens, except in cases where the Lithuanian foreign ministry acts as a mediator, as well as temporary residence applications. Those who have a valid Schengen or national visa, a residence permit in Lithuania or another EU country are a special case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russians and Belarusians arriving from outside the EU are subject to additional checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Seimas, the Lithuanian parliament, introduced national sanctions for citizens of Russia and Belarus for the first time in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
