December 20, Pozirk. <\/strong>Estonia does not recognize the upcoming presidential election in Belarus, said Jonatan Vseviov, secretary general of the foreign office in Tallinn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian leader Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka seeks reelection in January for a new five-year term. He has purged the political landscape to make it impossible for opposition politicians to run for president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We do not foresee that elections will come up in January in Belarus,” Vseviov told ERR News<\/em>. “If the regime declares elections to have taken place, then we will obviously help others see through the charade that it is. Unfortunately, the Belarusian people live under a dictatorship,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vseviov echoed remarks by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna. January’s election will be held in an atmosphere of terror and does not meet democratic standards, he said last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tsakhna also called on the West to tighten its sanctions against \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime. The Belarusian ruler must understand that it is unacceptable to sell out the country and people to Russia, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
