December 12, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> An image of Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski has been removed from the history textbook for 11th graders, the Belarusian Institute for Public History said in a research paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historian Alaksiej \u0141asto\u016dski presented the paper today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to him, the textbook contained Kalino\u016dski’s image since the BSSR times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141asto\u016dski pointed out that today’s school textbooks don’t mention the Mu\u017eyckaja Pra\u016dda<\/em> newspaper published by insurgents or the Letters from Beneath the Gallows<\/em> written by Kalino\u016dski in a Vilnius prison before being executed in 1864.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There is no mention of the disputes over Lithuania’s status,” the historian said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The textbook claims that the BNR [1918 Belarusian National Republic] was not a real state because it was totally subordinate to the German occupation administration, \u0141asto\u016dski stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As for the history of Soviet reprisals, the textbook mentions them in a separate section. However, it does not mention the history of Kurapaty,” said the author of the research paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also pointed out that the history textbook for 11th graders is “fundamentally anti-Polish.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describing Western Belarus in the interwar period, the textbook emphasizes Polonization, dictatorship, oppression and police terror, he said. “And the [Polish] Home Army is equated with Hitler’s punitive squads,” \u0141asto\u016dski said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As for Lithuania and the attitude toward it, after 1996 textbooks presented the GDL [Grand Duchy of Lithuania] as the state of Lithuanian feudal lords. The attitude was hostile, as if the Lithuanians were the same killing squad members as the Poles. But today, the Grade 10 and 6 textbooks edited by [pro-government historian] Ihar Marzaluk, describe the GDL as a multiethnic state created jointly by the Belarusians and Lithuanians. It emphasizes the important role of Navahrudak in creating the GDL, and the GDL’s Belarusian character,” the speaker noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Textbooks present the period of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s rule “in chronological order, without analysis or assessment,” \u0141asto\u016dski said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The events of 2020 are described succinctly,” he stressed. “The sixth presidential election took place on August 9, 2020. According to the central election commission, out of five candidates, the incumbent received 80.1 percent of the vote,” he quoted the textbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
